Exploring vintage crafts like, knitting, sewing and crochet! ✨
Hello! I'm Claude a costume maker, sewing teacher and dress historian making my own vintage wardrobe. I share tutorials to help you learn new sewing skills and share making logs of my projects so that you can see how those skills work in context.
I love sharing my sewing adventures with you all; whatever they may be. I love to experiment and try new things so I'll be sure to share all of that with you too.
My personal style is usually around about the middle of the 20th century. The 1940s is probably my favourite era to wear but I love to sew styles from all decades. My master's degree in Victorian studies has given me a passion for historical costume and I am looking forward to many 19th century outfits to come.
So welcome! I hope you will find something here to inspire your own creative journey and I look forward to sharing my work with you.

A VERY real month of Stashbusting | Spring 2024

It's been a tough few months on the knitting front. I won't lie things have been getting to me. I wasn't even sure I was going to upload this episode but here we are. As a result it's a long one. I know I said I called it a month but it ended up being more like 2.5 months 😅 So if you're interested in some very real knitting content where I don't really make anything and have a crisis in the mid...

The 1940s System I'm Using to TRANSFORM my Wardrobe
Переглядів 58 тис.Місяць тому
I'm starting a new challenge! Using the 1941 Clothing Rationing Scheme I'm going to be limiting my purchases of new goods in an attempt to be more sustainable. My hope is that this will make me more conscious of what I buy and when, what is working for me in my wardrobe and what I need to do to make it work better for me, and hopefully it'll inspire me to get more creative with what I already h...

Just Stick to Crocheting #crochet #couture

I don't often get sassy over such things because 1 minute is never enough time to go into the nuance of bigger issues like the ethics of high fashion so inevitably people will misinterpret what you say, often wilfully for the sake of their own ego.... BUT, the implication that crochet is a lesser art form than couture sewing really got my goat. And to imply that I'm just a silly little crochete...

Yes 🔥 It IS beautiful, but it’s just not working for you. Off to the frog pond and back to being possibilities again.
Very understandable, this will be a great motivation to think of more to do with the yarn 😁
You probably already know that but did you try to reverse the color, I use the row counter app and it has the option to get the text in white on black background. That what I use when I need something quick and easy and know I won't have a lot to read. For longer patterns I copy paste them in a word file and change it to the open dyslexic font, I also have the settings saved for my favourite line and word spacing. Lastly the "Accessible patterns group" on Ravelry have section about screen reader so they might have tips about software who work better for it or designer who write patterns compatible with screen reader. I didn't check it because on top of being dyslexic I'm awful at processing spoken instructions so obviously it's not something that would work for me.
A bit late, since you already started frogging, but I think maybe I would have kept tried splitting the dress into a skirt and a top and see if that didn't suit you better. But very excited to see what you make of it.
There is great power in admitting failure and learning from it to do it better next time. Maybe the new project will be THE project you've been looking for in ages. Kudos to you, Claude! 💪
Nooo but I do understand 😢
Good for you for making that decision, we could all see you weren't happy with the dress. But the yarn is beautiful, and you will find the perfect project for it one of these days.
Are you frogging the whole thing or just back to the original sweater? Just curious. 😊 I love this color so I'm sure what it becomes in your capable hands will be beautiful.
FrOG IT!!!!
I'm excited to see what the yarn becomes next!! 😊
Will you keep the sweater part or frog all of it?
Most men look good in blue. Just sayin’💙
I love frogging projects that haven't turned out well. Yarn is expensive, I enjoy the act of knitting, and if I can get double the use out of the yarn before it's a garment I want to use, then that's great value for money!
Knitting should bring you joy - and if the project isn't a fit for you, then it's totally okay to frog ❤
Excited to see what you're going to be doing with this yarn instead! Maybe the texture just wasn't right for this kind of sweater, but what projects would this be the right texture for?
I will say that I also had the EXACT same issues with the Over It slipover. In fact right now it's laying abandoned beside my bed because I managed to do 7 entire rows before I realized I should be doing moss stitch instead of rib. I chalked that up to being an inexperienced knitter though. i am vindicated to know I'm not the only one who struggled with that. I am not interested in trying to fix it so I will frog and start over some other time
You inspired me to start reducing my own yarn stash and the challenging aspect is very satisfying, but I've also found that I tend to shy away from projects branded as stash-busting because they're designed to just use yarn fast, whereas I did actually buy my yarn because I loved it and I want it to be used in a project that really shows it off
I can understand that all too well. Creative problem solving. I jumped into Aplique Quilting without any knowledge of quilting at all purely for the creation of it and it allowed me to use my analysis brain and creative side at once. I used to wheel throw and Id make dozens of pots and if they werent what I decided to be my standard. Id smash them to the dismay and horror of my classmates. 😅
I actually think this is a really healthy attitude to have. Spending a lot of time on something doesn't make it orecious, if fogging makes you the happiest it's the best thing to do.
It is such a pretty blue! Can’t wait to see what you decide to make!
Frog it! One day the right project will come along I'm sure of it
Hope the next project you make with that lovely blue yarn 🧶 turns into something that fits well and bring you joy!!🦆 ❤
hooray for making tough decisions! good luck with the unwinding, and have fun with the next challenge 💪
So excited to see what you decide to do with the yarn!
If it brings you more peace of mind I guess.😅
Can't wait to see what you make next❤
As Roxette said, "listen to your heart" and if your heart says frog, then it's off to the pond!
like experience means anything today. I have 20 years experience in my job and I suck at it
maybe ravelry would have someone willing to sell or swap the same dye lot of yor woolwarehouse yarn
Can you take it in a bit?
I’ve had similar problems with being in pain and not able to get to a shop to find yarn to start a new project.
Thank you
My mom had one of those. I remember playing with it as a kid and had no idea what it was for. Thank you
As somebody without dyslexia and who has only knitted from modern knitting patterns, the instructions for that slip on do sound extra confusing. I normally find charts easiest to understand, but I can usually figure out a written pattern with some photos and some practice. However I have also been struggling with a knitting pattern my aunt asked for, it seems normal to read, but trying to knit the damn thing has driven me slightly insane and I have totally given up on the pattern looking anything like the photo. I’m settling for the vague shape being accurate. I would honestly rather make her a whole new cape with a pattern I can use, which I may have to do with the second one because she asked for 2 . . .
Add some laced ties on the sides to shape it more. It’s a lovely piece but not flattering without proper undergarments or shaping in the torso. The neckline lies beautifully tho.
🦆
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Are you going to have a different box for your mending yarns?
My grandma has made a few acres of these crochet spreads, cushions, little under pads.... Her whole house was covered with it. 😅
Naaaah, that's a James Bond weapon.
Happy to hear that I’m not the only one that can’t wrap their head around wrong and right side because of how it sounds! I always have to think at least twice, and double check I’m doing the right thing. Love your videos!!
That was quite the saga. Thank you for the video! Yay boyfriend, safe in Witness Protection, but more importantly: dog! Oof, not understanding patterns is the worst, and I'm so sorry it made you feel stupid. But yeah...that was a typo in the pattern, but the pattern should have also said why you were doing that, and that was to give it an i-cord edge, and just those words would have made the typo more clear and easier to overlook. Also don't agree with it just "giving an example" without telling you that it will appear with different numbers elsewhere. So yeah... But it looks like you're feeling better now than you were at the start of the video. Hope that holds true and that you have a good July!
subbed just for the SASS
🦆I wish i had the patience and know-how to knit ...with wool.. wool i knew was from a farm that raised sheep well, but wool itself is more expensive than it ought to be if farmers dont get enough to expense the labor of sheering. And i live in a hot and humid environment, so wool is a no-go for 350 days out of the year. Anyway. My overall point is you're talented, and i appreciate your expertise.
I try things against myself to make sure that I have the right size before making the second side, or second sleeve as it cuts down the guesswork a little
As a fellow dyslexic knitter - the only thing that has ever helped me is adding an obscene amount of different colored highlighting to my printed patters XD
my mom made it
i am loving the pettiness of copy pasting into notes apps and changing fonts just to prove that someone is actively trying to gaslight you. putting time and energy into proving a point when one knows full well that the other person will not give a flying duck about it. i am the same. they can duck themselves... they could have just decided to go "oops, my bad, happy knitting!" and that's it, no need to make someone feel shit about themselves. anyway. the mohn cardi colours will be SO PRETTY together! you not mentioning the dye lot issues means they worked out fine, then?
i was crocheting and listening to you, and momentarily forgot pounds was currency, panicked for a second trying to figure out how many grams 80 pounds of yarn could be and what that would do to your stash lol the pattern struggles are definitely relatable, some modern patterns can be pretty vague unfortunately. it really depends on who writes it and what testers they have
Totally agree with quitting. I never thought about it like that. I have had a few things that got a negative emotion attached to it, and I never did wear it or use it. The investment fallacy is what got me. I'd already put in so much time thinking about it, getting everything I needed to do it, etc., etc. I really kind of liked your response. It kind of took a load of me, too.
